Sources and methodology

Gabon Eco does not produce statistics: the platform gathers and presents data published by recognised institutions. Every value is linked to a dataset showing the source, a link to the original, the date consulted and the licence. No value is entered without a source. When several institutions publish different figures for the same indicator, the source shown is always stated, because definitions and estimation dates can differ.

World Bank: World Development Indicators (WDI)

The reference database for population, GDP per capita, foreign direct investment, trade, access to electricity, telecommunications and forest cover. According to the World Bank data catalogue, the database is updated annually and released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0). Series are retrieved through the World Bank's public application programming interface (API).

International Monetary Fund (IMF): World Economic Outlook (WEO)

The source for real GDP growth, inflation, public debt, fiscal balance and current account series. The WEO database is published twice a year, in April and October, and contains both observed data and projections. IMF data is reused in line with the terms of use published by the IMF, always citing the source.

Bank of Central African States (BEAC)

The central bank of the six states of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC). Gabon Eco refers to it for policy rates, foreign exchange regulation, reserves and regional monetary statistics, based on official press releases and publications.

National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT Gabon)

The national statistics office, whose instatgabon.org portal previously hosted the publications of the Directorate General of Statistics (DGS), reports to the Minister of Planning. It publishes in particular the harmonised consumer price index (HICP) every month, the national accounts, employment and living conditions surveys, and the results of the general population and housing census (RGPL). Gabon Eco provincial population data comes from the RGPL.

Other sources

Our World in Data (electricity and energy series from Ember and the Energy Institute), the African Development Bank, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), Gabonese ministries and agencies. Maps use the COD-AB administrative boundaries published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) from National Cartography Institute data, under the CC BY-IGO 3.0 licence.

• Final: a value published by the source without any provisional flag. It may still be revised later.
• Provisional: a value flagged as provisional by the source, usually for the most recent year.
• Estimate: a value calculated by the institution for a year for which complete data is not yet available. For IMF series, years after the last observed year are stored as estimates, up to the current year.
• Projection: a future value produced by the institution. Projections are shown separately from observations and are never presented as outcomes.

Institutions regularly revise their series, for example when the base year of national accounts changes or with each new WEO edition. Gabon Eco re-imports series after each release: the new value replaces the old one and the date consulted is updated. A figure quoted in a news item remains the one published on the date of that item.

World Bank and IMF series are re-imported after each update of those databases. Procedure pages and legal texts show the date they were last checked. News items are published with the actual date of the event or original publication.

Data can be downloaded from the charts and from the data explorer. When reusing it, cite the original source shown for each series (for example "World Bank, WDI") as well as Gabon Eco. The terms of the original licence apply.
