Overview
The European Commission and the competent authorities of EU member states come in at the end of the chain for Gabonese exports to the European Union. Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products covers timber, cocoa and their derivatives among others: the operator placing these products on the EU market must file a due diligence statement showing that they do not come from land deforested or degraded after 31 December 2020 and that they were produced legally. The Gabonese exporter does not file this statement, but must give its buyer the necessary information, including plot geolocation. National authorities in member states carry out the checks. The Commission also publishes information on EU market access conditions. Its headquarters are in Brussels.
