According to Gabonreview, Les Acieries du Gabon, a scrap steel processing plant based in Port-Gentil, was inaugurated on 17 September 2026. The project represents an announced investment of 6 billion CFA francs and is expected to create 500 jobs. The plant is initially set to process 2,500 tonnes of scrap steel per month, a theoretical annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, with a target of scaling up to 5,000 tonnes per month.
The Minister of Industry and Local Transformation, Lubin Ntoutoume, who attended the inauguration, said, according to remarks reported by Gabonreview, that the state sets the rules and economic operators must respect them, framing the project within a strategy of building national value chains and industrial sovereignty.
The project's promoter, Mesmin Siga, plans to build a scrap recovery ecosystem covering collection, sorting and transport, including from vehicles abandoned in Port-Gentil, with the stated aim of collecting, transforming, producing and selling the material within Gabon. An extension of the project is being considered in Moanda, in Haut-Ogooue province.
