In late April 2025, the French ambassador to Gabon, Fabrice Mauriès, and the embassy's economic department visited the construction site of the Kinguélé Aval hydroelectric dam in the Crystal Mountains, as well as the nearby Kinguélé granite quarry.
According to the French Treasury (Direction générale du Trésor), the dam will be about 50 metres high and 450 metres wide, with a capacity of 34.1 megawatts (MW). It is expected to supply more than 10% of Libreville's electricity needs, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of 2026.
The project is carried by Asonha Énergie, owned 60% by the French investment fund Meridiam and 40% by Gabon Power Company, a subsidiary of the Gabonese sovereign fund. The concession contract was signed with the State in October 2019. Sinohydro is building the dam, with EDF and Artelia supervising the works. The nearby quarry, operated by Colas for more than 30 years, supplies aggregates for the dam and for Transgabonais works.
