The IMF issued press release No. 26/074 on 6 March 2026 at the end of a staff visit to Gabon. The team, led by Aliona Cebotari, discussed recent macroeconomic developments with the authorities and the implementation of the national growth and development plan. The release notes that the visit does not lead to a discussion by the IMF Executive Board.
Discussions covered the expected benefits of ongoing reforms in public financial management, governance, the business climate and the fight against corruption. The team stressed the importance of prudent fiscal and financial policies to safeguard macroeconomic stability in Gabon and the region. Dialogue was due to continue in the following weeks, including at the IMF Spring Meetings.
The team met President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, National Assembly President Michel Regis Onanga Ndiaye, Finance Minister Thierry Minko and Planning Minister Louise Pierrette Mvono, as well as representatives of the Presidential Taskforce on Debt, the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), state-owned enterprises and the financial sector.
In its April 2026 Macro Poverty Outlook, the World Bank also notes that Gabon requested an IMF programme in March 2026, amid liquidity and debt pressures.
