Gabonese Food Safety Agency
Overview
The Gabonese Food Safety Agency (AGASA) was created by decree No. 0292/PR/MAPDR of 18 February 2011. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development lists it among its agencies. Its role goes beyond food safety: it also acts as the plant health police. In that capacity it carries out phytosanitary checks on imports and exports, authorises the entry or exit of plants, seeds, soil, pesticides and plant protection products, and can order quarantine, disinfection, rejection or destruction of non-compliant consignments. It runs border inspection posts and inspection teams for food and slaughterhouses. For an exporter of timber, cocoa or farm products, it is the authority that issues the phytosanitary certificate; for a food importer, it checks sanitary compliance.
